At R.E.A.L, we believe that we can only leave a significant impact on society through sustained community programmes. Our commitment to various causes is reflected by a wide range of Community Outreach Events (COE) that we organize throughout the year. These are primarily aimed at benefitting our surrounding communities; whether by means of running social awareness campaigns or others.
The latest COE initiative saw R.E.A.L Kids USJ 12 partnering with the Breast Cancer Welfare Association of Malaysia (BCWA) to organize a Breast Cancer Awareness event on 15 August 2015. Supported by the Pejabat ADUN Subang Jaya, the event was graced by the presence of VIP guest and State Assemblyman for Subang Jaya, YB Hannah Yeoh. With the aim of raising greater awareness of breast cancer through talks and discussions, a team of medical staff was also on hand to assist attendees by offering advice and consultation while providing self-examination sessions and free screenings.
Many parents and members of the Residence Associations of USJ, particularly women, took some time off their Saturday morning to attend this one-day event in order to take advantage of these services. A total of approximately 75 women had their checks done on the day. In her opening address, YB Hannah Yeoh touched on the importance of women’s health and having monthly breast checks. With the recent alarming rise in dengue cases amongst children, she also took the opportunity to enlighten the audience on how to combat and prevent the spread of the mosquito-borne disease.
The objective of the event was two-fold; to educate the public on breast cancer and to inspire all parties to work closer together in curbing the prevalence of the disease. While most women know about breast cancer, many are still unaware of its signs or symptoms. Others may forget to examine themselves in order to detect this disease during its early stages.
Therefore, courtesy of our friends from the BCWA, female participants at the event managed to obtain relevant knowledge and information that they were seeking concerning the issue. Donations were also raised during the event via the sale of roses at RM5 each. All proceeds were handed over to the BCWA to help assist in their noble efforts.
With ‘Collaboration’ being one of R.E.A.L’s core values, initiatives such as this allow us to establish stronger ties with the community whilst giving something back to society. R.E.A.L Kids USJ would like to thank everyone who contributed in making this COE a success, particularly the BCWA for helping to promote the event by placing banners in and around Subang Jaya.
