A Week Dedicated to Promoting Patriotism
In its bid to instill love for the nation as well as enhance students’ knowledge on Malaysian history, the Department of Social Science of R.E.A.L Schools National, Cheras Campus held its ‘Patriotic Week’ during the tail end of 2015. A chalk full of patriotic-themed activities was lined up to ensure students get to fully immerse themselves with Malaysian history and culture for a whole week.
The event launch kicked off at the Hall of Character with a march past conducted by the School Scouts who carried the Malaysian flag to the stage with pride, confidence and grace. This was followed by a spirited rendition of the ‘Jalur Gemilang’ song by the students and teachers. Senior students from the classes of 4 Grace and 2 Vision then followed suit by beautifully performing the ‘1Malaysia’ song which lifted the atmosphere in the assembly hall further.
Upon the successful launch of the event, the week’s activities soon got underway. Among them was the ‘Jalur Gemilang – Hand Print’ where all teachers and students from Senior 1 to 5 literally ‘had a hand’ in making the longest Jalur Gemilang ever to don the hallways of Sekolah Seri Suria. The outcome was a one-of-a-kind Malaysian flag stretching over 12 metres with its red stripes hand printed by the Surians themselves! The participants certainly ‘left their mark’ on this memorable activity, which reflects the R.E.A.L core value of Creativity.
Other main items on the Patriotic Week agenda which further fostered the students’ creative streak include a mural project with two themes; one being ‘Hari Kebangsaan #SehatiSejiwa’ located at Foyer C and the other, ‘Taman Sejarah’, was painted at Block B of the school. Meanwhile, an exhibition featuring the students’ artwork dubbed ‘Street Art Launching’ was also held concurrently with various competitions such as the ‘Asean A4 Poster Competition’ and a ‘History Poster Competition’ that was based on Senior 2 History syllabus. These creative platforms certainly tested the Surians’ artistic ability in designing, sketching and painting; while allowing the school to unearth new talents along the way.
Other competitions that were on offer to all were the pertandingan membina contoh petempatan lestari, pertandingan membina tong kitar semula and pertandingan membina contoh pola petempatan. Students were able to derive value from these hands-on projects and learn a thing or two about resourcefulness as well. The Lower Senior students on the other hand, had the opportunity to challenge their mental prowess by participating in a History Quiz, with the best presenter from each class chosen to compete on general knowledge about the country. Poem, drama and singing competitions with a patriotic theme were also organized for the Lower Seniors in order to appeal to the diverse interests of the students.
The level of support and participation shown by the Surians throughout the event was remarkably evident, enthusiastic and encouraging. Ongoing efforts to build strong national unity have to begin at school level, and events like Patriotic Week go a long way in cultivating such spirit of teamwork and patriotism. With that, R.E.A.L Schools is proud to play its role in educating and nurturing the nation’s future leaders who are equally proud to be Malaysian.
