Befrienders Talk

“Pulling someone down will never help you reach the top,” said Mr. GangadaraVadivelSinnadural from the Befrienders. Earlier this year, Mr. Gangadara was invited to present an anti-bullying talk to teachers and students of R.E.A.L International School (RIS), Suria Campus, Cheras. Held at the school hall, the talk was aimed at fostering a greater understanding towards bullying and offering solutions to reduce bullying in society.

Among the topics that were touched on were the reasons why people bully. These include jealousy, peer acceptance, blackmail and the lack of capacity building. People who bully are also deemed to be generally unhappy, lacking confidence, impulsive and possibly having problems at home. Mr. Gangadara also added that it is normal to feel negative emotions as they are part of life. Victims of bullying often feel helplessness, isolated, hopelessness, suicidal, etc.

These victims often blame themselves which lead to alcohol and drug abuse, health problems and for students, poor grades. Ultimately, their family and friends would be affected as well. Those who wish to offer emotional help can do so provided they are confident, non-judgmental and knowledgeable. Befrienders meanwhile, are a multi-racial, non-religious organization that provides emotional support to people from all walks of life. Mr. Gangadara ended his talk by giving his audience the contact details of the organization should anyone require such help or support. Tel: 03-7956 8145 or email: [email protected]
