Helping the Homeless
Always encouraging students to remain grounded and not seek the spotlight but to instead seek for a spot to light; R.E.A.L Schools National, Cheras Campus continued its practice of spreading ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ to the needy and less privileged sections of society. There was certainly nothing random about the actions of 21 Senior 5 students from Wisdom class who organized a visit to Pusat Khidmat Sementara Gelandangan to distribute donation items to its residents. The charity project was initiated by Cheras Campus’ Civic Department in collaboration with Kuala Lumpur City Hall or DBKL.
The students descended upon the welfare centre bearing plenty of food and drinks; toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and shampoo; blankets and other essential items that provided much-needed relief to the community. They not only contributed in kind but also spent time talking to the folks; giving words of encouragement to lift their spirits and to remind them that people still care.
The centre forms part of DBKL’s ongoing efforts to tackle the issue of homelessness in Malaysia. According to a survey, the number of homeless Malaysians has more than tripled from 600 in 2014 to approximately 2,000 the following year. Therefore, transit centres such as Pusat Khidmat Sementara Gelandangan serve as a means to unite communities and the government to improve the quality of life of the poor and less fortunate. Situated along Lorong Medan Tuanku, the temporary shelter is equipped with built-in facilities such as food distribution stations, medical examination rooms, washrooms and prayer rooms.
With the motto ‘Doing Good Is Contagious – Don’t Let Goodness Die’, this social outreach project is the latest in a string of many other similar initiatives organized by the campus’ Civic Department throughout the year, every year. The pleasant participation of even the school alumni in this event adds credence to the fact that good character is lifelong in value and vital towards transforming lives and communities.
At the end of the day, the hallmark of a truly all-round education involves nurturing both heart and mind. Hence, shaping exemplary individuals who not only possess sound knowledge and critical thinking skills but also excellent character values is the inspiration behind R.E.A.L education.
