Johor International Student Leaders Conference 2017

In an effort to produce competitive human capital in Johor that are able to compete at various international platforms, the Johor Student Leaders Council (JSLC) organized the 4th Johor International Student Leaders Conference which was held at KSL Resort & Hotel, Johor Bahru from the 13th to 16th February 2017. The JSLC is a committee that was formed by Johor State Education Department and Iskandar Regional Development Authority back in 2010.

With the theme “Youth Leaders: A Spectrum of Opportunities”, this year’s conference certainly inspired students to hone their leadership skills and seek out opportunities to build a better Malaysia. A total of 24 students from R.E.A.L Schools, Johor Bahru Campus took the opportunity to participate in the four-day conference; comprising 14 senior students from the National school and 10 secondary students from the International school. They were accompanied by teacher Ms. Yong Huey Juian.

The conference was officially opened on Day 2 by YBhg. Dato’ Haji Ahmad Tajudin bin Jab, Deputy Director-General of Education Malaysia and saw its first keynote speaker, Cik Rogayah from Iskandar Regional Development Authority, talking about the future prospects of Iskandar projects that await suitable candidates.  Dr. Mohd. Lufti, the appointed United Nation Youth Leader as well as an active member of the Society of Malaysian Medical Association, then shared his experience in voluntary medical work in Cambodia.  Last but not least was Mr. Azhar Jalil, an active motivational speaker who intrigued and inspired the audience with his leadership tips.

The R.E.A.L students then took part in a workshop designed to instill leadership qualities and build teamwork. The evening of Day 2 saw everyone dressed in nice traditional clothes for a special formal dinner with the Johor Royal Family, truly an experience of a lifetime. The dinner also offered guests the unique experience of seeing exotic animals such as parrots, pythons and iguanas, among others.

Day 3 commenced with a trip to the Netherland Maritime Institute of Technology in Edu-city where participants learned the diverse terms used in maritime study through fun games. This was followed by a trip to Tanjung Piai National Park, an ecological haven with bountiful wildlife and magnificent natural wonders. Students were taught how to preserve the environment through activities such as collecting rubbish and planting young mangrove trees which is the insignia of this year’s conference. The final night was spent at the Malay Village where dinner and entertaining performances await.

Overall, the students did not only pick up the skills required to be a great leader, but also made pleasant memories with new acquaintances along the way. R.E.A.L Schools, Johor Bahru Campus’ continuous effort in producing tomorrow’s leaders was definitely aided by this conference, with the school always seeking to provide priceless platforms, opportunities and experience for its students to realize their potential.
