NEWS & EVENTS:
R.E.A.L Schools & Celebrities “Stand Up & Speak Out” against Bullying
Bullying has no place in today’s modern times and society. As such, R.E.A.L Schools took a huge step towards raising greater awareness amongst its students on the subject by organizing the ‘Stand Up, Speak Out’ anti-bullying campaign at its Suria Campus in Cheras on 3March 2014.
While the issue of bullying in school is nothing new, it is indeed a privilege and a raresight to have a couple of celebrity guests and a certified expert visiting your school to spread the anti-bullying message. These include Miss Malaysia/Universe 2010, Nadine Ann Thomas, and lifestyle blogger cum emcee and founder of a Malaysian online fashion boutique, Careen Tan.
Also present to share his knowledge was Dr. Edward Chan, Principal Consultant Psychologist of the International Psychology Centre in Kuala Lumpur. Their presence at the event to share their experience and expertise was reciprocated by the warm, rousing welcome afforded to them by the R.E.A.L School students.
Dr. Edward was the first among the distinguished panel of speakers to deliver his presentation; enlightening his young audience on bullying in all its forms as well as sharing several profound, real-life bullying cases and tips on how to handle bullying. Former beauty queen Nadine meanwhile, shared her life story and a touching personal experience with bullying during her young, schooling years. She was previously involved with other anti-bullying efforts and continues to be an active supporter of such campaigns.
Blogger Careen Tan, aptly spoke about ‘cyber-bullying’ and how it is prevalent in today’s social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Prior to the event, a ‘Stand up, Speak Out’ anti-bullying poster competition was run and all the submitted artwork was compiled and put on display at the School’s Hall of Character during the event. The objective of the competition was to raise greater awareness on the subject and to showcase the students’ unequivocal support against bullying.
According to Ms. S.P. Lee, Senior Principal of R.E.A.L Schools, Suria Campus, Cheras, “Education is the key to preventing bullying from occurring in schools. This is why R.E.A.L Schools is a firm advocate of character building as we emphasize on character development in our daily curriculum. In fact, character building is one of the ‘pillars’ of our schools’ educational philosophy, as we see the need and importance in educating and enlightening our students from a young age on pertinent social issues such as bullying”.
She also added that it was an honour to have special guest speakers Nadine and Careen, as well as a qualified professional in Dr. Edward, taking time off their busy schedule to be part of this maiden event and to lend their support towards a noble cause.
All in all, the students were treated to an entertaining yet informative event and were able to take home impactful and inspiring messages on bullying from the three specially-invited guests.
