R.E.A.L Students in JB Visit Royal F&B
Experience can often be life’s most valuable teacher. Subscribing to this, educational programmes at R.E.A.L Schools are designed to leverage on students’ learning experiences and knowledge to help them inculcate new skills.
With this in mind, 31 Secondary 5 students and 28 Year 11 students along with five accompanying teachers from R.E.A.L Schools, Johor Bahru Campus organized a visit to the Royal F&B Training Group at the Professional Culinary Skill College on 9 October 2017 as an initiative to help students learn about nutrition, food preparation and cooking, as well as making healthier food choices.
Both teachers and students were greeted warmly by the college staff, Miss Kelly Ng, upon arrival. During the briefing session, they were each given a pocket file containing information about the college and a menu list. The training involved R.E.A.L students visiting three separate kitchen workstations where they witnessed culinary demonstrations by professional chefs and the college’s culinary students.
They also gained hands-on culinary experience when preparing the list of menu items such as pastry, artisanal coffee, as well as Japanese, Chinese, and Western cuisines. The two-hour training proved invaluable as the students got a chance to be fully guided by professional chefs; communicating directly with them while being exposed to real-world, industry standards and practices.
A ‘Question & Answer’ session then followed before the closing ceremony. Overall, this experiential learning initiative put forth by R.E.A.L Schools, Johor Bahru Campus proved successful in engaging students in hands-on activities with useful, real-life application and benefits. In this case, students were educated on nutrition, food preparation, cooking and the F&B industry as a whole.
