RIS Cheras Recaps 2015 Highlights

American novelist, Nathaniel Hawthorne once said, “Time flies over us, but leaves its shadow behind”. As we embrace the arrival of February, we have completely overlooked how fast a month has gone by in the year 2016. From the achievements and breakthroughs of the previous year, memories are kept to serve as encouragement in overcoming challenges that lie ahead.

For R.E.A.L International School, Cheras Campus, revisiting the highlight events of last year evokes a sense of warmth and fervour. One of the most memorable moments for the Primary school community was the Festival of Lights Charity Show. In conjunction of Deepavali, the festival was a celebration of Indian culture, cuisine, song and dance.

A classical Indian dance dished out by Cresent Lew of Year 4 commenced the ceremony, followed by a sketch entitled ‘Ramayana the Epic’. The festival was further illuminated, literally, by a lamp dance performed by Year 1 and 2 students and a fashion show which featured young models adorably parading colourful traditional costumes as they strutted and cat-walked on stage. A wonderful Indian folk dance performance by the Year 5 and 6 students wrapped up the day’s programme on a high note as they left the audience in awe and calling for more.

Adding meaning to the event was the setting up of stalls for a good cause by both teachers and students. These stalls sold everything from delectable Indian delicacies such as cappati, samosa, vadai, briyani, murukkus, masala tea, roti canai and mango lassi to items like bangles, bindis and even Henna art to appeal to a broad range of interests. The proceeds gathered from this sale were channeled or contributed to the orphaned and underprivileged children of Pusat Jagaan Kanak-kanak San Pedro in Cheras. The success of the Festival of Lights Charity Show was apparent in terms of the amount of funds raised for the children’s welfare home. In the process, the school was able to cultivate good character values and cultural exposure amongst students.

Another notable achievement for R.E.A.L International Schools, Cheras Campus in 2015 was the Prefects and Student Council training camp. The one-day camp with the theme “Having the Right Attitude” was held at the school’s Performing Art Room with 15 students attending overall. The 10 prefects and five members of the Student Council who made up the group duly participated in workshops designed to foster team spirit and develop exemplary attitudes and leadership skills.

There was also a treasure hunt and ice-breaker session where students had to put their critical and strategic thinking skills to good use; as well as a blind-folding activity which required students to overcome their fears and learn to trust each other. Teachers did their best to make the camp meaningful by incorporating Character First values such as Patience, Diligence, Humility, Responsibility, Boldness, Resourcefulness and others into the activities.

As we bid farewell to 2015, 2016 marks a new chapter for R.E.A.L Schools and it promises to be equally, if not more, fulfilling and exciting as ever. New opportunities abound for further improvement in R.E.A.L Education; driven by a clear set of core values, vision and mission to continue transforming lives in every community.
