Welcoming New Cahayans on Board!
The beginning of the year is always an exciting period for everyone at R.E.A.L Schools as it is the time when the school community traditionally welcomes its newest members. This was evident during the annual Student Orientation Day at R.E.A.L Schools National, Shah Alam Campus. The students, all of whom hail from Senior 1 to 5, attended the three-day programme from 6 to 8 January 2016 at the campus’ Hall of Character. The Orientation offered a comprehensive yet colourful list of activity items to kick-start the students’ exciting transformative journey to become bona fide R.E.A.L learners.
The first day commenced with ‘icebreaking’ activities, during which students duly got acquainted and ‘warmed up’ to one another through activities that incorporated group work elements. The task of the day was to invent their respective group’s logo and slogan. As soon as the brief was assigned, the students wasted no time in letting their creative juices flow by crafting one-of-a-kind creations which they later presented to their fellow peers and prefects (who were present to help coordinate and monitor proceedings). The students then played a game of ‘musical chairs’ which was in line with the fun and friendly atmosphere on opening day.
The following morning saw more group-oriented activities taking place with students playing the thrilling ‘Balloon Game’ which requires participants to pop each other’s balloons using only their legs. A treasure hunt was also organized by the prefects, a challenge which not only tested the students’ nous and mettle, but their level of teamwork as well. Such forms of active learning and character education that go beyond books and classrooms are part and parcel of the R.E.A.L curriculum and culture.
The third and final day saw a shift to more serious matters with the delivery of a speech by Head of Discipline, Cikgu Aiza, who gave a thoroughly informative briefing on the rules and regulations of the school and how important it is to observe them at all times. Several more group games ensued thereafter which gradually led to the conclusion of the event.
As the latest round of Orientation Day drew to a close; it was heartening to see the fresh-faced students embarking on their maiden R.E.A.L journey towards obtaining academic excellence and quintessential character, while discovering new talents and hidden potential as well. The event itself was a success, with the spirit of ‘Collaboration’ – incidentally one of R.E.A.L’s 5C core values – being practised and plain for all to see. From strangers to friends, students from all walks of life came together to work as one in order to accomplish common goals. May next year’s edition prove likewise.
